A morning toasting habit could increase your risk of cancer, warns an NHS expert. Professor Robert Thomas revealed that there are simple changes we can make and warned against habits that could potentially damage our health in very serious ways.
The oncologist and consultant at Bedford and Addenbrooke's Hospital says the five main causes—cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung disease, and dementia—now account for 90 percent of deaths in Western countries. He warned the MailOnline: "Did you accidentally burn your breakfast toast this morning?
"It happens easily, and if you were in a hurry, you may have just scraped off the worst black spots and moved on. It won't have tasted particularly good, but I bet it never occurred to you that it could also increase your risk of cancer. Well, I'm afraid to disappoint you; from an oncology perspective, burnt toast is actually a no-go.
"That's because grilling or baking starchy or sugary foods (like bread) at high temperatures produces toxic compounds called acrylamides, which can damage your DNA and, over time, place a major strain on your immune system. And as a rule of thumb, the darker they are, the more acrylamide they contain."
The NHS expert continued: "While a piece of burnt toast isn't a big deal, consistently eating grilled or baked starchy foods over time will certainly contribute to increasing your risk of cancer. You also need to swap your jam spread in the morning (full of sugar, which increases your risk of cancer) and mash avocado instead, which is full of healthy fats.
"You'll find it's more filling, too." The professor spoke to the newspaper and revealed why you should never eat burnt toast. He says this simple, everyday food could pose a huge health risk if left in the toaster for too long—so keep that in mind and be careful.
